Mathew Letyo was shot and killed by men believed to be police officers who raided his home on October 9, 2024.

In a report on NTV Kenya, Letyo?s wife, Cynthia Chepkemoi, narrated the events of the night she lost her husband.

Chepkemoi said some men raided their home and kicked the door. However, the husband was shot when he tried to intervene and determine what business they had at his home.

?When they kicked the door, my husband walked towards it and said he wanted to see who those people were. Upon going out, one of the men held his hand, but he escaped towards the kitchen. The other men caught and handcuffed him before shooting him,? she recalled.

She added that two of the four men stole a torch, KSh 12,000 and other items in the house before leaving.

?After shooting him, two of the men entered the house and stole several things, including a torch and KSh 12k,? the wife explained.

Nakuru man killed by police officers

The mother of the deceased, Paulina, noted that the men were carrying machetes and arrows.

According to the family, the 35-year-old man argued with one of his neighbours after his cow trespassed onto the neighbour's farm.

They now suspect that could be the reason why police officers raided the home even though the officers did not mention the issue while roughing him up.

?My son was beaten without committing any crime; I hear someone reported him to the police saying his cow had eaten grass; is this a valid reason to kill someone? Mathew?s mother asked.

Noah Chesire, the deceased?s brother, noted that in case he had committed a crime, the officers should have arrested him and presented him to court.

?There are modalities of addressing this; they should have arrested him and presented him to court; why should people come with riffles to kill?? he posed.

According to him, it was unlawful to kill a man who hadn't resisted arrest and was already in handcuffs.

Kuresoi South police commander Jeremiah Leyariwala said detectives visited the scene and collected witness statements.

He further noted that the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) had taken over the case.
