This follows the KRA Tax Summit 2024, held between Monday, October 7 and Wednesday, October 9, in line with the theme of the Africa Customs and Trade Conference, "Trade Facilitation and Domestic Resource Mobilisation in the Digital Age."

During the event's official opening, Prime Cabinet Secretary (CS) Musalia Mudavadi urged KRA to expand the tax base in a way that enhances revenue collection.

"By widening the tax net, we can increase government revenue while safeguarding citizens from over-taxation," said Mudavadi.

How will KRA enhance tax compliance?

The taxman shared key revenue collection changes, including using artificial intelligence (AI) solutions to nab tax fraud.

KRA said it is integrating AI to streamline the revenue collection processes in a move to seal tax leakages.

"We are integrating AI to streamline processes, detect fraud, and enhance compliance. AI will help identify tax leakages and provide deeper insights into revenue streams, making tax collection more efficient and accurate," said KRA.

Speaking during the summit, KRA Commissioner General Humphrey Wattanga affirmed that cutting-edge technologies like IoT, AI, Big Data, and APIs will modernize and optimize taxpayer services for operational efficiency.

He said the efforts are among key parts of the authority's commitment to innovation and enhanced service delivery.

"KRA is exploring technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to improve the efficiency of its systems. This is part of ongoing modernisation efforts to optimise taxpayer services and operational efficiency," said Wattanga.

Govt to link M-Pesa paybills to KRA

Earlier, the government announced plans to integrate mobile money payment systems with tax registers.

Senior Economic Advisor Moses Kuria hinted at the plan set to launch in late December 2024.

Kuria noted that linking M-Pesa paybills as virtual electronic tax receipts will enhance the country's tax base.
