NFL analyst suggests Cardinals target Pro Bowl wide receiver in free agency

The Arizona Cardinals have expended a ton of resources in improving the offense around quarterback Kyler Murray in recent seasons. This past offseason the team spent the fourth pick in the 2024 NFL Draft to acquire who they thought could serve as a true #1 receiver in their offense, former Ohio State product Marvin Harrison, Jr. They?ve also spent resources to take Michael Wilson at the position and added tight end Trey McBride to the passing attack.

It?s been a concerted effort to turn the Cardinals passing attack into one of the best in the NFL, and through six weeks of the 2024 NFL season, that simply hasn?t panned out as the front office may have hoped. Murray has yet to throw for 300+ yards in a game this season, and has three games on the year with fewer than 200 yards. He also has just one game this year with multiple touchdown passes.

The offensive struggles have led to a disappointing 2-4 start to the season, and questions about where the offense goes from here. One NFL analyst, Matt Holder from Bleacher Report, believes the answer lies in next year?s free agency period, in the form of current Tampa Bay Buccaneers? Pro Bowl wide receiver Chris Godwin. Godwin is scheduled to be a free agent at the end of the season, and Holder believes it would be in the Cardinals? best interest to heavily pursue the star wide receiver in the offseason.

The Cardinals will have plenty of money to do so, as they are slated to have nearly $120 million in cap space next offseason, and they?ll have a clear need at the position, as they have four receivers on the roster scheduled to hit free agency themselves. While it may seem like a luxury for the Cardinals to continue to expend resources at wide receiver, Holder believes that Godwin would fit nicely in the Cardinals offense.

Godwin has plenty of experience in the slot, which would likely be where he?d line up in the Cardinals offense, with Harrison and Wilson serving as the team?s outside receivers. Godwin could also bring mentorship to a young wide receiver corps, and a championship attitude to a team that has had hopes of contending with the 49ers in the NFC West.
