What did President Ruto say about Albert Ojwang's death?

On Wednesday, June 11, President William Ruto finally broke his silence on the matter, leaving the National Police Service to fall on its sword even as he called for quick investigations.

Top security bosses led by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, Inspector General Douglas Kanja and the Director of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations(DCI), Mohammed Amin, spent the better part of the day at the Senate answering difficult questions on who was responsible for the death of Ojwang.

Who is the prime suspect in Albert Ojwang's death?

DCI boss Amin placed the blame squarely on the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) of Central Police, Benjamin Taalam, naming him the prime suspect.

Taalam has since recorded a statement with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).

Will Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat resign?

At the same time, the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Eliud Lagat, faced sustained pressure to step aside and allow the investigations to take place. It was Lagat's complaints that triggered the chain of reactions that led to Ojwang's arrest and later death while in police custody.

Amin reiterated that the complaints were valid and that DCI was acting within the law.

Albert Ojwang's love for rugby

As Mzee Meshack Ojwang battles to come to terms with what happened to his only child, glowing tributes have continued to flow in for the 31-year-old teacher.

It has since emerged that Ojwang had a deep passion for rugby, something he tried to impart to his students.

Ojwang began his teaching career at Kituma Secondary School in Mwatate, Taita Taveta County, where he taught History and CRE.

After class hours, the Pwani University alumnus stepped on the pitch and coached rugby.

The chairman of the Board of Management (BOM) of the school, Ndambo Robert Ngeti, paid a moving tribute to the slain teacher, reminiscing on how he convinced them to give him the job.

"Albert, when you came for an interview at Kituma Boys Secondary School, I sat in front of that seat of the Chair Board of Management. As you unpacked your competencies and skills before the board, just like any job seeker, you had sharpened your speech. Your oratory skills and mental strength were unmatched," he said.

The BOM chairman admitted that he was instantly sold by Ojwang's passion for rugby that he relinquished his position as the part-time coach.

"What struck me was the fact that you had a close interest in rugby, a sport I cherish. I remember telling Marami ''in this boy, we have a rugby coach'' and we surely settled on you because of the extra competencies that you exhibited and were valuable to the school. I could tell your rugby skill levels."

"Before you joined Kituma, I was the head coach of the school rugby team. I would spend my weekends with the boys as we prepared for the championship. I remember telling Omuka (his other mentee)"huyu jamaa ameiva ruji"."

He further went on to say he had no regrets about hiring Ojwang, and he would do it all over again, as his presence in the school gave the children renewed hope to succeed.

"As the Board of Management chair of the school, I have no regrets having seeing your potential to hire you as our teacher. I have had good rugby moments with you and Omuka in school and out there when we went for competition. As a mentor, I know I made my contribution in influencing you in as far as coaching rugby is concerned."
