Witnesses Heard Loud Screams from Albert Ojwang's Cell, IPOA Discloses

Nairobi ? The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) has shared further details regarding the investigations into the killing of blogger Albert Omondi Ojwang.

Who has been grilled over Albert Ojwang's death?

Speaking at the Senate on Wednesday, June 11, IPOA deputy chairperson Ann Wanjiku issued an update on the progress made in determining Ojwang's murder.

The IPOA deputy chairperson revealed that 17 police officers had been summoned to record their statements.

Wanjiku noted that so far, 13 officers have written their statements on what transpired on the night Ojwang was killed.

Among those who have recorded their statements are the officers who were interdicted by the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja and the DCI officers who arrested Ojwang in Homa Bay.

"They were summoned and started appearing before the investigating team on Wednesday. They are also recording statements related to what transpired. So far, 13 have recorded their statement," she noted.

What witnesses said about Albert Ojwang's death

In her submission, Wanjiku hinted that Ojwang might have been killed inside his cell at the Central Police Station.

IPOA's preliminary investigations show that Ojwang was booked alone in the cell upon his arrival at the Central Police Station.

Two witnesses who were in a cell neighbouring the one where the blogger was being held heard loud screams on the night he died.

"We have established that Ojwang was alone in the cell. And in the neighbouring cells, we have recorded statements from two witnesses who have said they heard loud screams from Albert Ojwang's cell," Wanjiku said.

Who is the prime suspect in Albert Ojwang's murder?

Meanwhile, the Director of Criminal Investigations, Amin Mohamed, who also appeared in the Senate, told the senators that Samson Taalam, the officer commanding Central Police Station, should be treated as the main suspect in Ojwang's murder.

According to Amin, preliminary investigations showed that the front office officer, called Talam, but he declined to book the suspect.

He strongly defended the DCI officers who arrested Ojwang in Homa Bay, insisting that they treated him well.

According to Amin, the deceased was taken directly to the Central Police Station after arriving in Nairobi.
