The officer commanding the station, Samson Talam, led his juniors at the IPOA headquarters, where he gave his account of the circumstances of Ojwang's death.

Earlier, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss, Mohamed Amin, had pointed to Talam as the prime suspect in the death of the blogger.

However, seeking to absolve himself, the OCS explained that Ojwang had already been injured when he was brought to the station.

The OCS said he learnt this after arriving at the station, adding that he was not there when the blogger was brought in.

How was Albert Ojwang tortured?

Meanwhile, The Star newspaper reported that Ojwang endured hours of torture in the Karura Forest after being removed from the cell where he had earlier been booked while in good health.

Sources confided in the newspaper that he was handcuffed, kicked and punched into unconsciousness.

The torture reportedly happened between 9 pm and moments past 1 am on Sunday, June 8; a senior police officer was present when Ojwang was being assaulted.

According to the sources, after becoming unconscious, the blogger was returned to the Central Police Station by his attackers, but the officers on duty denied admitting him as he was unresponsive.

It was at this point that Talam was called to the station and devised the idea to rush Ojwang to the hospital after seeing his condition.

The blogger was confirmed dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Were Central Police Station CCTV working?

While appearing before a Senate plenary on Wednesday, June 11, IPOA vice chairman Ann Wanjiku shared that the authority's findings revealed the surveillance cameras at Central Police Station were tampered with.

Wanjiku told the Senate that the cameras were initially working properly until the fateful night when the power cable was disconnected.

According to her, no footage of Ojwang's moments in the station was recovered, this pointing to the likelihood of the tamperation being deliberate to conceal evidence.

She revealed that IPOA had contracted forensic experts to establish whether the data captured was expunged or the hard disc removed purposely.

Speaking in the same session, Police Inspector General Douglas Kanja apologised to the country over the preliminary police report that alluded to Ojwang killing himself.
