Was the CCTV system at Central Police Station working?

Speaking in the Senate on Wednesday, June 11, IPOA Deputy Chairperson Ann Wanjiku disclosed that they had found evidence to rule out the earlier report by police that Ojwang took his own life.

According to Wanjiku, the IPOA investigating team had established that the CCTV system at the office of the Central Police Station OCS had been tampered with.

?The CCTV systems located at Central Police Station OCS's office had been interfered with. Preliminary investigations into Albert Ojwang's death in custody rule out the theory of taking own life," Wanjiku said.

The revelation by the IPOA attracted uproar from senators, the majority of whom wanted to know the person who tampered with the CCTV systems at the police station.

Nyamira senator Okongo Omogeni asked the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to provide CCTV footage detailing Ojwang's movement from Homa Bay to Central Police Station.

"I believe you have CCTV cameras. If we want to connect the events before he ended up at Central Police Station, can we get access to the CCTV footage that tracks the movement of this young man all the way to Central Police Station? So that to know if he was taken to Central dead or alive," Omogeni said.

Kitui senator Enock Wambua said, "IG Kanja, who interfered with the CCTV footage at the Central Police Station on the night that Albert was murdered? And you cannot tell us that you don't know, because there will be a problem."

Did Albert Ojwang arrive safely in Nairobi?

Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja told the Senate that the blogger arrived safely in Nairobi from Homa Bay, where he was arrested by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

According to Kanja, Ojwang was booked at Central Police Station after the OCS confirmed that he was in good health condition

Kanja said Ojwang contacted his wife at 9:24pm, 11 minutes before his booking, to confirm he had reached Nairobi.

The police chief stated that officers stopped in Narok for refreshments, where Ojwang was given water, soda, and biscuits.

Why was Ojwang put in solitary confinement?

When Kanja appeared before the Senate on Wednesday, June 11, he was tasked to explain why Ojwang was detained in a separate cell alone.

The police boss failed to give a convincing answer and instead asked senators to be patient and allow IPOA to conclude investigations and provide feedback on the question.

However, the lawmakers were not amused. They hard-pressed the inspector general to take responsibility as the head of the police service and give his account without relying on IPOA's findings.

Kanja did not give further explanations despite the mounting pressure.

He, however, apologised to the nation for the misleading police report that claimed Ojwang killed himself by striking his head against the wall.

Autopsy showed the deceased had head injuries and neck compression marks, which were synonymous with assault.

The slain teacher also had soft tissue injuries all over his body, which pathologists said could not have been self-inflicted as alleged by the police.

What else you need to know about Albert Ojwang's case

IPOA revealed the identities of the DCI officers who arrested Ojwang in Homa Bay county.

IG Kanja told the Senate that Ojwang's arrest stemmed from a post accusing his deputy, Eliud Lagat, of planting loyal officers to control police revenue and intelligence.

On Tuesday, June 10, pathologist Bernard Midia disclosed that Ojwang died from head injuries and neck compression.
