Ojwang, a secondary school teacher, tragically lost his life in an alleged police killing.

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has called for the nationwide vigils to take place on Friday, June 13 , beginning at 5:00 pm.

This is to honour the late Ojwang? and raise awareness on the rising cases of insecurity targeting educators.

According to an internal memo dated June 11 and seen by TUKO.co.ke, KUPPET?s national executive board resolved to organise the vigils following what it described as the ?brutal death? of their colleague at the hands of law enforcement officers.

The union announced that the main events will be held at KUPPET?s head office in Nairobi and across all county branches.

In Homa Bay County, where the teacher hailed from, the local branch will conduct the vigil alongside Ojwang?s family at their home in Kokwanyo, Rachuonyo East Sub-county.

?This is a time for the teaching fraternity and all Kenyans to come together, offer prayers for Mr Ojwang?s family, and shine a spotlight on the security threats that we all face,? said Secretary General Akelo Misori in the memo.

The vigil ceremonies will feature prayers, readings, and reflections on the life of the late teacher.

KUPPET also intends to use the occasion to highlight the harsh realities teachers endure, particularly in remote and high-risk areas.

?There will be thoughts spared for the plight of teachers working in hardship situations and young people who have borne the brunt of extrajudicial executions and kidnappings,? the memo further read.

KUPPET urged all members and members of the public to join in the planned vigils to remember Ojwang?, stand in solidarity with his family, and call for justice and structural reforms in the country?s security systems.
