Giants urged to sign two-time All-Star as ?perfect change of scenery candidate?
The San Francisco Giants have a lot of work to do this offseason.
After attempting to grab a playoff spot out of the competitive National League West by signing the likes of Jung-Hoo Lee, Matt Chapman and Blake Snell, the team posted a losing record and have appointed franchise legend Buster Posey as their new president of baseball operations.
Posey will have to strike a balance between the team?s younger talent and its collection of highly-paid stars, which will include Chapman, Alex Cobb and other veterans next season.
Outlining the free agents that the Giants ?can sign to make it back to the postseason in 2025,? Zach Pressnell of FanSided urged Posey and the front office to consider making an infield upgrade by adding New York Yankees infielder Gleyber Torres.
?Last season, the Giants played Thairo Estrada at second base for 94 games,? Pressnell noted. ?On the season, Estrada slashed .217/.247/.343 with single digit home runs and only 10 walks on the entire season. He wasn?t doing damage with the bat and he was rarely, if ever, walking. The Giants can upgrade their middle infield if they?re willing to take a flier on Yankees second baseman, Gleyber Torres.?
Torres has had his own struggles in 2024, slashing just .257/.330/.378 as he hopes for a significant payday in free agency. But his seven-year big-league career suggests he is better than this latest campaign suggests, as he holds two All-Star nods and a career .265/.334/.441 slash line.
That former success makes Torres a potential bounceback candidate, particularly if a new uniform can give him a chance to reset.
?But assuming that the Yankees want to go in a different direction, Torres would be a perfect change of scenery candidate for the Giants,? Pressnell added. ?Torres has slugged over 35 homers in a season before and he could be back in the 25 to 30 range if he gets his groove back. He?s the perfect piece for the Giants to look into adding this offseason.?
Even after a relatively down year, Torres? resume and his premier defensive position mean he will have a number of suitors this winter. But the Giants might see him as a discount add who could benefit from some new surroundings.
