Arsenal head coach steps down after Gunners' stuttering start to season

Jonas Eidevall has stepped down as head coach of Arsenal Women, leaving the club with immediate effect.

After a tough start to the season, including a 5-2 loss to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Women?s Champions League, the Gunners are now left scrambling for new leadership.

Eidevall joined the club in 2021, winning two FA Women?s League Cup titles during his time in charge. His greatest achievement came when he guided Arsenal to the semi-finals of the UEFA Women?s Champions League in the 2022/23 season, a feat that hadn?t been achieved in 10 years.

But despite these highs, the recent struggles on the pitch seem to have cast a shadow over his tenure.

Renee Slegers steps in for Arsenal

With Eidevall gone, assistant coach Renee Slegers has taken the reins as interim head coach. Sporting Director Edu Gaspar has expressed full confidence in Slegers, saying: ?Our focus will now turn to appointing a new head coach, but in the meantime, we fully support Renee as she leads the team for two crucial matches this week.?

Despite the tough start to the season, fans are hopeful that Slegers can spark a revival and turn things around.

Eidevall?s departure might feel like a curveball, but the Gunners have seen tough times before and come out stronger.

Arsenal's director of women?s football Clare Wheatley also thanked Eidevall for his efforts, stating: ?Jonas has brought us back-to-back trophies and many unforgettable moments. We wish him and his family all the best for the future.?

As the Gunners gear up for their next challenges, the search for a permanent head coach is officially under way. For now, all eyes are on Slegers and whether she can steady the ship.
