American billionaire Elon Musk announced the rollout of XChat, which is part of the X premium subscription and allows users to send encrypted messages.

Which features does XChat contain?

According to a post on his X account, Musk said the feature comes with vanishing messages and the ability to send all kinds of files.

"All new XChat is rolling out with encryption, vanishing messages and the ability to send any kind of file. Also, audio/video calling," read the tweet in part.

The world's richest man explained that XChat is built on Rust with (Bitcoin-style) encryption, referring to it as a whole new architecture.

What to know about XChat

XChat is poised to compete with other platforms, including Messenger, WhatsApp, and Snapchat.

According to Grok, XChat, Signal, and Telegram differ in features and security, with XChat offering end-to-end encryption, vanishing messages, and X integration.

The AI platform noted that Signal provides default end-to-end encryption and minimal data collection, ideal for privacy, but lacks advanced features.

"Telegram supports large groups and bots, but only Secret Chats are encrypted, with metadata collection concerns. Choose Signal for security, Telegram for versatility, or XChat for X users, though its unproven security warrants caution."

According to Business Insider, the XChat feature is already available to some X Premium subscribers.

The new feature is aimed at enhancing privacy on the X platform as it complements Musk's push for an all-in-one application.

Why Elon Musk exited Donald Trump administration

The announcement for the new X feature came after Musk announced his exit from the Donald Trump administration.

President Trump appointed Musk as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in January 2025, immediately after his inauguration.

The role, which was supposed to end on May 31, 2025, saw the tech billionaire spearhead efforts to cut federal expenditure, citing wasteful spending by USAID and other agencies.

The X owner said he will be devoting his time to his businesses, including SpaceX and Tesla.

Musk's businesses suffered during his 130-day tenure in government and affiliation to Trump policies.
