Nairobi parents in trouble after 3-year-old found with severe injuries

A Nairobi couple appeared at Makadara Law Courts facing serious charges related to the alleged abuse of their three-year-old daughter.

George Gregory Okoth and Michelle Atieno have been charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm and subjecting their child to cruel treatment at their City Carton residence during several incidents in May 2024.

Okoth faces an additional charge of indecency involving inappropriate contact with the minor.

The case came to light when Investing for Children received a tip from a concerned member of the public reporting ongoing child abuse.

The caller alleged that the toddler was regularly assaulted with an electric cable and had suffered burn injuries.

Officers immediately contacted police and visited the family's residence, where they found the child in a distressed state, appearing frail, withdrawn, and visibly afraid of her parents.

Medical examination revealed multiple burn injuries on the child's ear, lips, thighs, and private areas, along with whip marks on her back and additional bruising. The child reportedly told officers that her father had touched her inappropriately.

During the investigation, when officers attempted to take the child back to the house to identify objects used in the alleged abuse, she refused to enter and clung to the children's officer while crying uncontrollably.

The child also declined to return to the police station with her mother, choosing instead to stay with the children's officer. She has since been placed in protective care.

Both parents were granted bond of Sh50,000 each, with alternative cash bail set at Sh25,000. The case is scheduled for hearing on November 11
