Erastus Ethekon: IEBC Chair Nominee Forced to Retake Oath after Forgetting to Hold Bible

In a high-stakes session that has captured national attention, Erastus Edung Ethekon, IEBC nominee, faced rigorous scrutiny before the National Assembly?s Justice and Legal Affairs Committee.

However, a light moment unfolded on Saturday, May 31, when Ethekon appeared to forget to hold the Bible while taking his oath

"I, Erastus Edung Ethekon, do swear that the information I shall give before this committee on the matter under its consideration shall be the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. So help me God," he said.

Just as he was about to take his seat, a member of Parliament asked why Ethekon did not hold the Bible during his oath.

"Point of order, we need to know why the nominee is not swearing by the bible. I know you can affirm, but you must state why," one MP said.

At that point, Ethekon apologised for the oversight, explaining that he had not seen the Bible during the oath-taking.

He reassured the committee that he is a Christian and fully entitled to take the oath using the Bible, emphasising his commitment to uphold the responsibilities of the position.

"Sorry, chair, I had not actually seen the bible. It was not brought to my attention," Ethekon said.

The IEBC chair nominee was then instructed to retake his oath while holding the Bible, in accordance with his faith, which he complied with.
