Nairobi county officials launched a citywide crackdown on noisy nightlife venues, warning that non-compliant establishments face indefinite closures

In a bold move that has sent ripples through Nairobi?s nightlife scene, the county government has officially ordered the closure of the iconic Orchid Lounge, a hotspot famed for its vibrant atmosphere and eclectic crowd.

Why was Orchid Lounge closed?

Citing persistent noise pollution complaints, authorities have stepped in to silence the once-booming venue on Ngong Road, leaving partygoers and business owners alike questioning what?s next for this beloved nightlife gem.

During a night raid following multiple complaints from residents near the club, Nairobi County Chief Officer of Environment Geoffrey Mosiria ordered the facility to remain closed until it complies with the issued notices.

"Today, we have closed Orchid Lounge on Ngong Road indefinitely due to their failure to implement proper soundproofing measures to minimise noise pollution emanating from their premises," Mosiria told TUKO.co.ke

Mosiria said the club was given multiple verbal and written warnings to follow noise control rules. He noted that the establishment failed to take any corrective action, which ultimately led to its closure.

"This closure will remain in effect until full compliance is achieved in accordance with environmental regulations. Let this serve as a stern warning to all bar and restaurant owners operating illegally in residential areas and causing noise pollution: we have issued notices, and for those who have failed to comply, we will shut you down indefinitely until you do so," he added.

Mosiria emphasised that the Nairobi County government is dedicated to enforcing environmental laws and regulations for all businesses. He also said efforts to shut down noisy venues will persist across the city?s affected neighbourhoods.

"Impunity must end. Nairobi is a city of law and order, and no one is above the law when it comes to protecting the health, peace, and well-being of our residents. Every business must respect the rights of Nairobians to live in a clean, safe, and peaceful environment," Mosiria said.

Was the Habanos lounge closed?

This comes days after Governor Johnson Sakaja?s administration ordered the closure of Habanos Lounge, a well-known entertainment venue located along Kiambu Road.

Mosiria told TUKO.co.ke that the decision to shut down the club was driven by repeated complaints from residents who were disturbed by excessive noise coming from the establishment.

He emphasised that the county government?s aim is not to permanently close businesses but to ensure that all entertainment spots operate in a manner that is environmentally responsible and complies with noise pollution regulations.

Mosiria further explained that county officials have already engaged with the management of Habanos Lounge. They provided clear guidelines on the specific measures the establishment must implement to address the concerns and be allowed to resume operations soon.
