Kikuyu Sub-county Police Commander Joseph Ndege confirmed the incident while sharing more details about the tragedy.

He stated that the sisters were attempting to cross the road at an unauthorised spot, which he said has contributed to an increase in accidents along the busy highway.

"This highway is still under construction, and in this regard, signs and markers are yet to be installed. The main precautions that should be in place?road markings and street barriers?are still missing," Ndege said.

Joseph Ndege's cry to drivers, pedestrians

He urged both pedestrians and drivers to be extra cautious while using the busy and still-under-construction road.

Since the infrastructure remains incomplete, the officer appealed to all road users to remain vigilant in order to avoid accidents and reduce fatalities.

Ndege added that the traffic police have implemented measures to improve safety and save lives.

"We have deployed our traffic officers to the area. We are trying to guide and direct pedestrians on how to cross safely," he added.

Kenyans react to accident on Nairobi-Nakuru Highway

The heartbreaking story sparked widespread reactions online, with social media users flocking to the comment section to express their sorrow:

Nancy Madanji:

"That road has no footbridge or zebra crossing. The government should do something about it because there's a public school nearby, and students must cross that road every day to attend school."

Charity Wairima:

"Our God is merciful and faithful. Let us pray for our country. May the sisters rest in peace."

Ruth Mukunga:

"I've never seen a footbridge in that area. Near the zebra crossing, people often sneak across the road through the blocks."

Faith Chepkoech:

"My heartfelt condolences to the family. Rest in peace, sisters."

Sammy Shichenga:

"A father and mother will not have supper tonight with their daughters. So sad ????. May they rest in peace."

Njugush Wa Gas:

"One term! One term. Microphone testing. I blame Ruto. The sisters should have been in church practicing. They're struggling because of the hard economy caused by the Ruto regime."
