Mwangi had gone to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to witness the treason trial of Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu.

His four-day disappearance prompted his wife, Njeri, and fellow activists to launch a media campaign, eventually leading to his discovery, abandoned in Ukunda.

Ugandan human rights defender and lawyer Agather Atuhair was also detained with him.

What happened during Boniface Mwangi's detention?

Speaking about the experience, he cried and painted a sorry picture; something you would never wish to happen to your worst enemy.

According to Mwangi, they were made to remove their clothes and then bound them in a humiliating and painful position with their legs suspended in the air.

"I was handcuffed and blindfolded. They told me to strip n*aked. After that, they removed the handcuffs. Then I was grabbed by about four men. They lifted me so fast. Before they lifted me up, they put some gloves on my hands. Then they lifted me up and after that they put us in a position where my legs are up and they started hitting my feet.

The activist revealed that they muffled his cries by putting something in his mouth and played gospel music loudly in the car to mask the sounds.

The captors interrogated him several times, accusing him of coming to destabilise Tanzania.

Mwangi was then subjected to a disturbing and invasive assault. It was a sad story to tell, and the activist broke down while narrating the experience.

"They put something in my mouth so I couldn't cry. They had also opened the car and put some gospel music on to sing in the background. They then started asking as questions: why are you here? Why are you coming to destabilise our country? Then a certain guy put lubricant in my a*nus and started inserting objects," he said and got overwhelmed and started crying.
