Bahrain's national carrier has started passenger flights between the Middle East nation and Nairobi after a 13-year hiatus

The flights will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Sundays, with two more flights expected to be added on Fridays

The airline stopped operating passenger flights on the Bahrain-Nairobi route in 2012, a move that came as a major blow to customers between the two destinations

The flights, resuming after more than 13 years, will operate five times per week to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi.

The carrier will deploy an Airbus A320-type plane that can accommodate between 150 and 186 passengers when fully booked.

"Today, we proudly receive the Gulf Air inaugural flight to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, marking a new chapter in connectivity between Nairobi and Bahrain. Here's to a new journey, more choices, and exciting opportunities for business and leisure," said a statement from the Kenya Airports Authority on Monday, June 2.

The new service will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Sundays with additional flights on Fridays.

The airline's CEO, Jeffrey Goh, said the airline is committed to expanding its global reach while fostering tourism and economic ties between the two nations.

The route will benefit passengers seeking seamless onward connections through Bahrain to destinations in the Middle East and beyond.

Nairobi is Gulf Air's third destination in Africa

This will be the airline?s third destination in Africa after it started flights to Cairo in Egypt and Casablanca in Morocco.

The return of the flights to Nairobi by Gulf Air underscores the growing demand for enhanced connectivity between the Middle East and East Africa.

Nairobi, a pivotal hub for tourism and business in the region, is currently served by other players such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, FlyDubai, as well as Kenya's national carrier, Kenya Airways.

Kenya Airways to launch a new route in its expansion plans

Meanwhile, Kenya Airways plans to start flights to London's Gatwick Airport on Wednesday, July 2, in an expansion plan aimed at raking in more revenue.

Flights to Gatwick will operate three times per week (Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday) out of Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

This means that KQ customers will travel to London via either Heathrow Airport (LHR) or Gatwick Airport (LGW).
