This follows serious allegations of malpractice and ethical breaches regarding transplant procedures at the Mediheal Hospital in Eldoret.

During a press conference at Afya House on April 17, Duale reaffirmed the ministry's commitment to ensuring patient safety and rebuilding trust in Kenya?s healthcare system.

Mediheal Hospital kidney scandal

To investigate the matter thoroughly, Duale revealed the formation of an independent expert committee tasked with auditing kidney transplant services at all Mediheal facilities over the last five years.

The committee will evaluate clinical practices, ethical standards, governance, and patient safety protocols, with a report due in 90 days.

In an effort to maintain the integrity of the investigation, Duale also ordered the suspension of Maurice Wakwabubi, the Acting Head of Kenya Blood Transfusion and Transplant Services (KBTTS), and Everlyne Chege, who led a prior ministry probe into transplant matters in December 2023.

"Their suspensions aim to avoid any conflict of interest and ensure a fair and transparent investigation. Dr. Martin Sirengo, Senior Deputy Director of Medical Services, will temporarily oversee KBTTS," the statement read in part.

Additionally, Duale instructed the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) to immediately halt the registration of new foreign medical practitioners, except those from East African Community countries.

The KMPDC was also directed to audit all currently licensed foreign practitioners in Kenya and report back within 90 days. These actions are intended to improve oversight and align the country?s practices with international standards.

"Patients receiving or seeking kidney transplant care at Mediheal have been urged to seek treatment at other approved facilities, including Kenyatta National Hospital, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, Aga Khan University Hospital, and several others," the statement further read.

Duale emphasised the ministry's ongoing commitment to patient rights, safety, and the highest standards of medical ethics, noting that these measures are vital to restoring public confidence in Kenya's healthcare sector.

He was joined at the briefing by Principal Secretaries Mary Muthoni (Public Health and Professional Standards), Ouma Oluga (Medical Services), and the Director General for Health, Patrick Amoth.

Amon Kipruto explained that he was initially approached by a group of men who offered him money for his kidney, but he declined.

However, facing financial hardship, he later contacted the group and agreed to the sale, a decision he now deeply regrets.

The group arranged the surgery at a hospital in Eldoret, where Kipruto underwent the procedure. He received KSh 600,000 for the donation, but that marked the beginning of his ongoing troubles.
