Why Premier League has Boxing Day games
This year's fixtures are not a rarity. Boxing Day is celebrated as a day of giving gifts to the vulnerable, and football has become a major part of it.
Boxing Day games in English football have been a tradition since 1888. In fact, matches used to be played even on Christmas Day, but that stopped in 1965, and it became a preserve to have the matches the day after Christmas.
When was the first Boxing Day fixture?
GMS reports that the first games to be held on this Day were Derby Country vs Bolton Wanderers and Preston North End vs West Brom in 1888.
Which is the most successful team on Boxing Day?
Manchester United are the most successful team in the games held on this day. The Red Devil have racked up 21 points, ahead of Liverpool's 17 and Arsenal's 16. Ruben Amorim could use another win on Thursday when he travels to the Molineux to face Wolves.
"I just want to win. I don't care about Christmas. I'm just focused on what we need to win the next match. That's the only thing I care about. We are privileged we can play on Boxing Day to give some happiness to the fans, and we want so badly to win." said Amorim as captured on the club's website.
Who are the top scorers on Boxing Day?
Harry Kane (10), Robbie Fowler (nine), Alan Shearer and Robbie Keane (both eight) and Thierry Henry(seven) are the most successful Premier League players on Boxing Day.
